Benefits Of Shea Butter

Posted by Purrfect Sunday on

In the world of natural skin care, there are many great products out there with ingredients that your skin can benefit from and make it look oh-so fine! Today, we’re going to focus on one that is the star of the show - shea butter. This useful ingredient has various benefits that will allow your skin to shine like it should. Let’s see what it is all about!

What is Shea Butter?

Before we dive into the benefits of shea butter, here’s a few tidbits about it! Shea butter is extracted from shea tree nuts and can be mostly found in West Africa. It has an off white ivory coloring and the texture can be described as firm, yet supple. One thing to keep in mind is that the texture of shea butter should never be hard or greasy.

Now onto the good stuff! Shea butter has a plentiful amount of benefits about it that will do nothing but great things for your skin. Here’s what shea butter can do for you.

Great Moisturizer

The first great benefit of shea butter is that it serves as a great moisturizer for your skin. If your skin is feeling a little dry, shea butter will help reduce it and make sure that your skin locks in and retains its moisture. The emollient properties found in shea butter will soak into your skin, creating a soft barrier that seals in moisture. What’s the best part about this? This moisturizing effect can last for several hours, giving you a gorgeous and healthy glow!

Wait...but what if I have oily skin, won’t this clog my pores?! It sure won’t! Shea butter is non-comedogenic, meaning that it will not clog your pores. Additionally, shea butter contains high levels of linoleic and oleic acid. These two acids team up and balance each other out which makes it easy for your skin to absorb and not appear oily after application. These oils also act as a “reflatting” agent that restores lipids which creates moisture quickly.

Full of Antioxidants

Antioxidants do a whole lot of good for your skin and boy does shea butter have two great vitamins in it! There is a decent amount of vitamins A & E which promotes strong activity. Not only that, antioxidants are an important anti-aging agent. Given this it will help protect your skin from free radicals that lead to premature aging and tired looking skin.

Great Healing Properties

Shea butter is chock full of healing properties that will help lead you to picture perfect skin! If your skin tends to suffer from redness, scarring, or even swelling, shea butter can tone, soothe, and overall help reduce this issue because of the plant esters that are found in shea butter. They contain anti-inflammatory properties and when it is applied to the skin, they trigger cytokines and other inflammatory cells to slow their production.

Due to the moisturizing and antioxidant properties of shea butter, they help your skin generate new and healthy skin cells. When moisture is balanced on the surface of your skin just right, you will have fewer dead skin cells in the way of fresh cell regeneration. If you have scars, their appearance will be minimized because the shea butter stops keloid fibroblasts from reproducing and new cell growth can take place.
